Dr Janet's story is one of courage and determination the likes of which sporting legends are made.

Dr Janet Gray MBE

As a schoolgirl Janet was very happy, outgoing, confident, bubbly and an independent person. In her early years she was involved in swimming and life saving and hers was that of a normal happy young girl. Then, suddenly, at the age of 21, she suffered a life changing experience and lost her sight. Her world was plunged into sudden darkness and the contented life she knew vanished forever.
Janet Gray, aged just 21, had to adjust to the terrifying existence of a world of complete blackness and for what must have seemed like an eternity it was a battle of strength and will. Each day was a struggle to exist.

That is until Janet discovered the world of water skiing, and her life was dramatically transformed. By hard work, sheer determination and love of the sport Janet reached the pinnacle of blind water skiing by winning the World Disabled Championships in the three disciplines, (slalom, tricks and jumps) and became the overall World Champion and World record holder  in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Janet tops the world again in 2003
Great Britain's Janet Gray has successfully retained her World Blind Water-Ski title in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The 38-year-old from Co Down took gold medals in the three disciplines of slalom, tricks and jumps to take the overall top prize for the third time in succession.

She established new world records in the Tricks and Jumps sections and a European record in the Slalom which she won in a thrilling ski-off.

Janet, who received the MBE in the 2001 New Year Honours, defeated very strong international competition from 70 skiers representing 17 countries.

Northern Ireland's golden girl from Hillsborough  was also an important member of the Great Britain team to retain the World Championship for the third successive time.

But the year 2004 had other plans for Janet.

The vagaries of life hadn't finished with Janet just yet and life took another dramatic turn in the guise of a steel jump ramp which Janet hit whilst water skiing at 40mph during winter training in Florida.

Janet died three times while in intensive care in the US and her husband Paul was told to arrange her funeral.

Such was the force of the impact that her survival was considered impossible, but Janet's remarkable strength and determination once again came into play and the faint signs of life turned into hope, and despite sustaining multiple serious injuries Janet survived.

Doctors were highly sceptical about her chances of ever walking again, but they were dealing with a person who embodies determination, and after three long, painful years of intensive rehabilitation and numerous surgeries she stunned the sports world by donning her water skis once again.

The journey was long and hard with many turns, but to the astonishment of her fans, family and experts, Janet once again took victory at the 2007 World Disabled Water Ski Championships in Townsville, Australia winning 5 medals including 4 Golds.

This year has seen Janet again win gold at the British National Championships held at Whitworth Water Ski Centre, and our club members were out in force in July acting as stewards, and of course supporting our own champion.

Dr Janet Gray M.B.E. A remarkable woman, a remarkable journey, and a remarkable symbol of courage, determination and hope.

Janet, when she is not thrilling people on the water is an accomplished After Dinner Speaker, recounting her amazing life story with honesty, true spirit and humour.
